Courses Detail

Below are the officially approved, curriculum-aligned listings and standardized description profiles of the courses slated for credit delivery at Am-Can Business and Tech Institute. In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Education requirements, each full credit represents exactly 110 scheduled instructional hours, and prerequisites must be strictly verified prior to course enrollment. Students may utilize Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) or Mature Student Assessment (MSA) pathways where applicable.

[MTH1W]  Mathematics, Grade 9 (De-Streamed)

Grade Level: Grade 9  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course enables students to consolidate and continue to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including analyzing, conjecturing, and justifying, as they solve multi-step academic problems.

Domestic Prerequisite: None. Eligible Grade 8 students may apply to enroll early under the ‘Reach Ahead’ protocol using Form OSR-RA-01 with written parental and elementary principal consents.

International Prerequisite: Equivalent middle school completion (Grade 8) verified via official translated and certified academic transcripts.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Continuous enrollment is open. Out-of-province or overseas student placement is determined via PLAR Equivalency (Form OSR-PLAR-01). Mature students over 18 without standard transcript history may take the Mature Student Assessment (MSA) Online Evaluation to establish baseline eligibility.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: Utilizes releases from EQAO Grade 9 assessments as formative feedback and module review components. There is no challenge process for Grade 9 credits.

[MPM2D]  Principles of Mathematics, Grade 10 (Academic)

Grade Level: Grade 10  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the use of technology, and abstract reasoning. Students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply systems of linear equations; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.

Domestic Prerequisite: Mathematics, Grade 9 (MTH1W or legacy MPM1D).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 9 Mathematics verified via transcript review or PLAR Equivalency Evaluation.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Out-of-province students or transfers from non-inspected private schools may be granted equivalent credits based on the Principal’s evaluation of previous learning under PLAR (Form OSR-PLAR-01). Mature students over 18 may write the MSA Online Evaluation to verify mathematical readiness.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: There is no challenge process for Grade 10 credits. Passing this academic course is the mandatory prerequisite for senior Grade 11 University Functions (MCR3U).

[MCR3U]  Functions, Grade 11 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 11  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students’ experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.

Domestic Prerequisite: Principles of Mathematics, Grade 10, Academic (MPM2D).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 10 Academic Mathematics verified via formal transcript translation and certified evaluation.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Equivalency credits (up to 10 of 14 senior credits) may be granted through the PLAR Equivalency process (Form OSR-PLAR-01) for placement purposes. Mature students may use PLAR challenge or MSA evaluations to support accelerated graduation pathways.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: Strictly aligned with senior curriculum policy. All references to ‘probability’ (which belongs strictly to College-stream MBF3C or Data Management MDM4U) are excluded. This course is the essential prerequisite for Advanced Functions (MHF4U).

[MHF4U]  Advanced Functions, Grade 12 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 12  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before university.

Domestic Prerequisite: Functions, Grade 11, University Preparation (MCR3U), or Mathematics for College Technology, Grade 12, College Preparation (MCT4C).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 11 University Functions (MCR3U) verified via certified transcript translation and PLAR Equivalency Review.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Under PPM No. 132, mature students over 18 may earn up to 10 Grade 11/12 equivalency credits through PLAR. If they present a completed postsecondary degree from an accredited Canadian institution, the Principal may waive other requirements, allowing them to qualify for the OSSD by completing a minimum of one Grade 11 or 12 credit (such as MHF4U).

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: Must be taken prior to or concurrently with Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). MHF4U is a mandatory admission requirement for university STEM, computer science, and business faculties.

[MCV4U]  Calculus and Vectors, Grade 12 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 12  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of curves in two- and three-dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rate of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modeling of real-world relationships. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business.

Domestic Prerequisite: Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation (MHF4U). (Note: MHF4U must be taken prior to or concurrently with MCV4U. Same-semester concurrent enrollment must be officially documented inside your student file).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U) verified via certified transcript translation and PLAR. Concurrent rules apply.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Equivalency credits are granted by the Principal through PLAR Equivalency (Form OSR-PLAR-01) for out-of-province or international students. Mature student pathways apply under PPM No. 132.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: Critical Audit Notice: Under Ministry guidelines, if a student concurrently enrolled in MHF4U withdraws from MHF4U, they must immediately be withdrawn from MCV4U to preserve credit integrity. There are no exceptions to this concurrent prerequisite rule.

  3. Step 3: Receive Decision & Pay Tuition You will receive an email with your admission decision. If approved, this email will contain your official Offer of Admission, your tuition invoice, and secure instructions on how to pay your fee.

  4. 🎓 Step 4: Complete Enrollment Once your fee payment is successfully processed, your enrollment is finalized! You will receive your Enrolment Contract, Letter of Acceptance (LOA), and immediate access to your course materials on techstudy.ca.
