Courses Detail

Below are the officially approved, curriculum-aligned listings and standardized description profiles of the courses slated for credit delivery at Am-Can Business and Tech Institute. In accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Education requirements, each full credit represents exactly 110 scheduled instructional hours, and prerequisites must be strictly verified prior to course enrollment. Students may utilize Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) or Mature Student Assessment (MSA) pathways where applicable.

[SCH3U]  Chemistry, Grade 11 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 11  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of the properties of chemicals and chemical bonds; chemical reactions and quantitative relationships in those reactions; solutions and solubility; and atmospheric chemistry and the behaviour of gases. Students will further develop their analytical skills and investigate the qualitative and quantitative properties of matter, while focusing on the importance of chemistry in other branches of science, technology, and everyday life.

Domestic Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic (SNC2D).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 10 Academic Science verified via transcript translation and PLAR Equivalency Review.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Equivalency credits are documented in the OSR using Form OSR-PLAR-01. Mature students may use MSA Online evaluations to prove prerequisite science literacy and chemical notation baseline competency.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: This course is the mandatory prerequisite for senior Grade 12 Chemistry (SCH4U), which is required for university life sciences, engineering, and pre-med programs.

[SPH3U]  Physics, Grade 11 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 11  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of waves and sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics. Students will also analyse the interrelationships between physics and technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.

Domestic Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic (SNC2D).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 10 Academic Science verified via certified transcript translation and PLAR.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Equivalent credit assessments are processed via PLAR (Form OSR-PLAR-01) for $250.00 CAD. Mature students may take the MSA Online evaluation to establish scientific notation and mathematical reasoning readiness.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: This course is the mandatory prerequisite for Grade 12 Physics (SPH4U), which is required for university physical sciences, computer science, and engineering faculties.

[SCH4U]  Chemistry, Grade 12 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 12  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of reaction, equilibrium in chemical systems, and electrochemistry. Students will further develop their problem-solving and investigation skills as they investigate chemical processes, and will refine their ability to communicate scientific information. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in daily life and on evaluating the impact of chemical technology on the environment.

Domestic Prerequisite: Chemistry, Grade 11, University Preparation (SCH3U).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 11 Chemistry (SCH3U) verified via translated certified transcript and PLAR Equivalency Review.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Under PPM No. 132, mature students may complete PLAR equivalency assessments to map out senior prerequisites. If lacking SCH3U, the Principal may waiver the prerequisite utilizing Form OSR-WAIVE-01 with strong academic justification (e.g. university chemistry background in home country).

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: Prerequisite for university programs in pharmacy, medicine, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and nursing. Proctored final examinations are strictly mandatory.

[SPH4U]  Physics, Grade 12 (University Preparation)

Grade Level: Grade 12  |  Credit Value & Hours: 1.0 Credit (110 Scheduled Instructional Hours)  |  Delivery Format: 100% Online Asynchronous (www.techstudy.ca) OR 100% In-Person Site-Based (Vaughan Campus)

Course Description: This course enables students to deepen their understanding of physics concepts and theories. Students will continue their exploration of energy transformations and the forces that affect motion, and will investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation. Students will also explore the wave nature of light, quantum mechanics, and special relativity. They will further develop their scientific investigation skills, analysing, qualitatively and quantitatively, data related to a variety of physics concepts and principles.

Domestic Prerequisite: Physics, Grade 11, University Preparation (SPH3U).

International Prerequisite: Evaluated equivalent of Grade 11 Physics (SPH3U) verified via translated certified transcript and PLAR.

PLAR & MSA Admissions Pathways: Equivalency mapping is evaluated via PLAR (Form OSR-PLAR-01). Prerequisite waivers (Form OSR-WAIVE-01) may be processed at the Principal’s professional discretion for students demonstrating equivalent mathematical and scientific competencies.

Academic Audit & Implementation Notes: A core university admission requirement for mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering, aerospace sciences, and astrophysics programs. Proctored exams are required.
